Calling all Batman fans: Ask Christian Bale Your Question!

Every summer needs a blockbuster and this year is no different. Batman is back! As the latest edition of one of the most famous superheroes is out this week, we’ve partnered with Yahoo! Movies to bring a little The Dark Knight frenzy to Yahoo! Answers.

We’re asking you, the Answers community around the world, for the perfect question for Christian Bale. The best question will be put to him, on your behalf, by Yahoo! and recorded on video.

So, what do you want to ask Christian? When you’ve decided on your killer question, just post it as a comment below.

Tim Burton was the first director to immortalise Batman on the big screen and ever since Michael Keaton’s impressive performance alongside Kim Basinger, the caped crusader has had many changing faces. In The Dark Knight, actor Christian Bale brings to life Bruce Wayne, a.k.a. Batman, who’s fighting against the fearful Joker, played by the late Heath Ledger. Rumour is we see our hero cross the thin line between good and evil like never before …

You have until Monday, 21 July, 2008 to post your question below. We’ll then select the best question from all the Answers communities around the world who have participated, and it will be answered by Christian on video and posted on the blog next week.

For more information about The Dark Knight and a sneak peek of the film, check out the Yahoo! Movies trailer.

  7. If you were given the opportunity to portray any other superhero, comic book related or otherwise, but you would have to give up any future Batman roles, which character would it be? I’d like to think that “Batman” is too near and dear to you for you to give it up for anything, but if there’s any other role out there that would make you give that up I’m sure I’m not the only who wants to know. Thanks for taking the time to answer!

  8. You bat-armour looked really awesome (and awfully heavy). To me, you looked exactly like what I would have expected the Batman to look like in real life. I adored the movie, all aspects of it. Thank you!

My question would be: How did it feel, being in the bat-armour? Did you really feel like you were the Dark Knight for a moment when you were clad in the Bat’s suit? Sort of like some kind of flare of power inside of you? =)

  11. You are in a category with Michael Keaton as the only person to act as batman in 2 successful movies in the past 18 years.

How do you feel about your success? And are you worried that because of your portrayal as Batman that film directors won’t see you as Christian Bale anymore?

  16. Having already made your mark in the acclaimed Empire of the Sun, after which you affectionately attribute your “insane” tendencies to spending far too much time with John Malkovich, you have matured into a handsome, driven young man with a string of independent and blockbuster hits to your name.

What do you feel is the reason behind your successful transition from former childstar to adult A-lister?

  20. Yes the storyline & prequel slant for batman begins was more then just intresting as were the special effects..but it was more then that…it was the sense of vunerability and humanity…struggles & depth that YOU infused into a character millions have known for generations…it was your ability to play n portray contradictions so well that breathed new life into a traditonal comic book hero…one thats not simply driven by a sense of justice expected from ‘a hero’ but one whos conflicted and lives in shades of grey vs black & white…Cain Freeman Oldman & Bale…you bring us along on a fantastical ride where we, because of your acting abilities, for a couple of hours can actually believe in fantasy world….So from just a someone whos so far removed from Hollywood n its games..thank you for the hours of entertainment n escape…your talents and efforts are very much appreciated.

Financial haggling for future productions between studios & managers aside…have you 1…given any thought to staying with this character for the long run…however many more movies that would entail over the years?…and 2..do you have any desire to possibly write &/or direct in the future?

    be safe n heart happy

  84. We don’t see todays kids with that same type of fascination and regard for comic books the way we used to have and its seeming more and more that these comic book screen adaptors are directed to a more adult audience.

The Punisher lept from comic book to big screen and is totally an adult themed film and was extremely well done in the sense it kept to the format of a comic book format but without a campy feel.

Which leads me to ask: who is your own favorite super hero from comic book legend, what is the best adaptation from comic book to screen you have seen so far and what comic book super hero would you love to see made into a film?

And what do you think about the glut and plethora of mainstream Hollywood now utterly plying the market with every single comic book hero large and small, popular and lesser reknown?

Does this mean we are turning to a more steady reliance on these mythical figures genetic from comic book material and put on the big screen for entertainment purposes, or , put another oblique way has Hollywood been slowly turning away from its silver screen creations of heroes for some time now and been running out of material? Films like Hidalgo and Sahara haven’t tended to fare well at the box office.

And if Mr Bale does actually get to read this I just would like to say: thanks Christian you are a wonderful actor and are very inspiring indeed for the next generation of actors.

  91. DO YOU THINK PEOPLE WILL FINALLY CREDIT YOU FOR BEING THE MOST IMPORTANT CHARACTER AND ACTOR IN THE BATMAN MOVIES LIKE I DO (AND I THINK YOU MUST TOO PRESUMABLY?) I am referring to glory hog Tom Cruise at the Batman Begins premiere which got all the media attention and now the unfortunate demise of Heath Ledger which has understandably put the focus on him. Maybe the third time will be the charm and you will get the respect you so richly deserve. I’m a big fan of Heath’s too. I will watch the movie when the crowds thin out so that I am not disturbed by noisy patrons during the movie. It’s killing me to wait but I love The Batman that much. And it looks SO COOL… Thank you for helping make The Batman and Bruce Wayne what they should be as Bob Kane originally intended and is realistic. You have made me so happy I can’t say. Keep up the Great work. P.S. Equilibrium should be called Bruce Wayne. Awesome Film for its action & story.

P.S. Love your work and esp. the diversity of it - been following your movies since Velvent Goldmine and Metroland.

  109. Your career has been amazing. You’ve made great films that never disapoint. Even though you have made a string of extremely successful films and have become one of the greatest actors of our generation (my favourite!) you remain a true actor, and not a “celebrity”. 114. I rarely go to the movies and do not buy gossip magazines. There is however, a career trend for Actors/Actresses that cannot go unnoticed even if one only watches the nightly television. A proven career scenario that seems to follow through time and time again. Actor/Actress comes to hollywood with dreams of being immortalized in a Star on the sidewalk. Actor/Actress does bit parts and odd jobs until finally reaching the goal of that one big break. That one movie in a long shot that breaks records at the box office and skyrockets the Actor or Actress’s career, If one is really fortunate the one long shot turns into a sequel and then… The choices are endorsements, second rate movies or marriage, children and moving on into private life. What I am wondering is which direction will Christian Bale take? Will you now be a real life super hero for the betterment of the planet and mankind? or continue to reach beyond what may be the brightest star you may ever hold? Have you given thought to your own legacy?

  116. Batman is an iconic figure such as that of superman… a character fighting to maintain peace and good in a war against evil.

How does the “crossing of the thin line between good and evil” bring batman closer to reality… aka. how does the deeper personality portrayed with a human corrosive aspect (if that makes any sense) connect batman as a personality and make him more real and/or human?

  117. Hello Christian

    How are you?

The first thing I would like to say is. You are one of my favorite actors. :)

The way Heath preformed the Joker was the best. He took his character to a whole new level. In my eyes in this version of the Batman franchise he is the one and only true Joker which leads me to my question(s).

After Heaths untimely passing do you believe that leaving the Joker alive and in prison was the right choice? And if they must bring back the Joker who would you pick to perform in the role?

Thanks for letting me ask you these little questions.

    All the best. :)

  122. Every summer needs a great action movie and it seems that Batman is it!

It must be quite an emotionally, challenging journey for any actor to portray such a role.

  123. Batman made himself the scapegoat for a city that refused to defend itself against its evil oppressors and wanted to punish someone for daring to be more decent, courageous and humane than they were. 127. My dude,

American Psycho really shaped a lot for me and made me realise you are one of the best actors of our generation. The business card sweaty face was CLASSIC. Even Empire of the Sun was a big part of my youth, to see you mature into the actor you are now is a great experience to be a part of. Your skills are classic, oscar should hit you across the hand any time soon.

My question to you is this: Did you ever envision becoming a super hero (on film, i know its not real!) and if so, did you grow up reading comics? and Who would you like to act with in the coming future?

  128. There’s a dark side in this movie and a dark side in all of us. To be a successful actor/actreess, one often has to immerse themselves deeply in a character in order to bring it to life on the screen. Is there a danger in immersing oneself too deeply in a character that one portrays on the screen? I wish to express my condolences to you and your peers with respect to Heath Ledger. Were there any dangers in assuming the role of Batman or the Joker? I hope that the role of Batman has no unforseen dark sides for yourself. It is a dark tale and one that will impact many lives, including the actors.

  130. Batman Begins was a success amongst critics and fans and set a new bar for comic book movies. Many of us wondered, “how will Nolan top that movie?”

TDK is out, certainly everyone who has seen the movie will be amazed how this one topped Begins on different levels.

Now, once again, fans are asking, “How will they top TDK?? in the third film?”

    A second question.

Will Nolan introduce a Dick Grayson in the next film?
(I didnt mention the name Robin)

    I absolutely loved your movie.

  133. Christopher Nolan and yourself have both come out and said that this version of the Batman movies has been heavily inspired by what many consider the “essential” Batman comics. Some of which include “The Dark Knight Returns”, “The Long Halloween” and “Batman: Year One”. You’ve also stated in interviews that your knowledge of Batman prior to the filming of Batman Begins was limited to the TV shows and previous film releases. Understanding of course that your portrayal is truly an amalgamation of several sources (and of course your own personal acting traits), which of the many graphic novels you’ve been exposed to would you say “most” influenced your portrayal.

(Please pick ONE and please elaborate for us fans).

PS: Exceptional job on the film and continued success in your endeavors.

  138. Reports say that Heath Ledger was consumed by the character he personified in the movies (the Joker). His subsequent overdose a result of not being able to separate his mind from the mindset of being such a psychotic character. As an actor of your ilk, who has so much skill and seems to also, similar to Ledger, adopt the mindset of his on-screen characters, do you ever fear that you too will succumb to the mental pressures associated or created by one of the characters you portray?

Also, do you feel that perhaps our society needs a character similar to Batman sometimes?
