Tips to Improve Asking & Answering Questions

We’ve been listening to your feedback and have been working hard this summer to keep improving Answers. One change you may have recently noticed is that the Ask and Answer pages now incorporate tips to help you get the most out of Yahoo! Answers.

Now, when you ask or answer a question, you’ll see a little bubble giving you some tips:

If you make any spelling mistakes — we all type too fast sometimes! — you will be warned and, with help from the spell checker, be able to correct your mistakes.

Select Change to choose the correct spelling, then click Done.

You’ll also be warned if your caps lock is on. In the online world, writing in capitals is often perceived as shouting and regarded as bad netiquette.

For those who feel they don’t need any help, the tips can easily be closed — just click on the X on the top right-side of the speech bubble to make them disappear.

These are just a few of the tips we have for you — use them to really make your Answers shine! And don’t forget to leave us your comments about them — we love hearing from you!

  1. You know what would be a good idea? Putting a metal category in the music section!

  2. First of all I know all about typing in all caps
    that its shouting or flaming.
I also notice the new spell check I do my spell checking at the end which means the old spell check should have been left alone.
What should have been combined here was the grammar check
there are more complaint of bad grammar than spelling.

  4. I would like to turn the tips off. I find them intrusive.

  5. I find the CAPS LOCK warning is too sensitive. I can hardly get a TLA (Three Letter Acronym) out without it complaining at me. The rule shouldn’t be 3 caps in a row, it should be “there are at least ten characters, and none of them are lower case”.

My browser has a spelling checker. I can add words to it. I’d like the turn off the Yahoo checker permanently.

I have not yet seen any improvement in questions or answers due to these tips. I don’t expect any. But you have the database, and could probably write a script that could pull some statistics, for spelling mistakes, etc.

  7. I really like the idea of the spell check, But I would like it to wait unless everything is finished so that I do not have to keep going into it. And loss the question I was asking.

  8. i find it’s nice to know your spelling errors, but because of my personality, i like to be creativee.
i usually add extra letters on the end of somee words.
also, a few times, i was quoting something and it said i had too much punctuation.
in english class, i was told before a quotation, you place a comma then an open quote, your quotation, and close quote.
yet, it still said i had too much punctuation.

  9. I preferred the old inline spell checker. This one i find myself less likely to use, since it inevitably finds ‘mistakes’ in longer posts that are just proper names and such. Therefore, i tend to ignore it. The old ‘red underline’ was much easier to just correct as you go.

  10. I am getting familiar with the question forum ( area where you answer questions)
I still maintain I ignore that spell check until I am done at the end.
Making a correction I have noticed the old answer forum
I am wondering if that spell check could come up at the end.
