Movie Mania

People get movie recommendations from everywhere: friends, co-workers and even Answers. This week, I am following the stars. The Toronto International Film Festival has turned the city into a haven for big name stars, so I am taking a few days to follow the celebs to premieres and hopefully catch a glimpse of them in action.

There are movie fans across Canada that eagerly await September each year, but, for me, it is a first. So, I need some film festival guidance. When you hear the words ‘film festival’, you immediately think of the red carpet. But you won’t necessarily run into a celeb during the festival, so how will you know if you are going to be in the presence of the stars?  And, if they are around, how do you get a chance to meet them?

Another big part of the festival scene is the parties. Those of us who haven’t been to one picture huge events with free drinks flowing and beautiful people all around. I might live in this city, but I have no idea how to get into these parties. Even if you aren’t into paying for movie tickets, these events sound fabulous — if you are up for a hunt and know someone important enough to get in.

Even if I don’t get to a party, I will be heading to at least one gala screening during the next week. This has me all flustered. On television, the stars are always decked out in tuxes and gowns, but as a regular member of the viewing public, what am I supposed to wear? It seems Answerers are torn as well.

I think this year is going to be a training session for me to get a feel for the festival days … next year, I will really pull out my movie buff side.

In celebration of the festival, what is your favourite movie?

  1. I didn’t make it to TIFF, but am really looking forward to catching When Life Was Good when it shows at VIFF in October. The debut director, Terry Miles, did vlogs while at TIFF and will be doing the same at VIFF, hosting them exclusively on their official site and on Super U (www.superu.ca) - a Canadian site that features short films from up-and-coming filmmakers in Canada.
