A Spoonful of Love

February is finally here, which means Valentine’s Day is just around the corner. Soon enough, lovers will rush to stores grabbing anything in the shape of a heart, smothered in chocolate or sprinkled with red and pink paint while singles will either mingle or curse the sweetest day of the year. Last year, statistics showed that 84 per cent of Canadians celebrated Valentine’s Day and of those, 60.9 per cent spent about $95 per person on a gift for their significant other.

Whether you’re single or in a committed relationship, there are lots of fun ways to have a fantastic V-Day. A night out with friends is always a great idea. Skip the clichéd candlelit dinner and a movie and opt for a more creative way to spend Cupid’s day. A couple of years ago, my girlfriends and I organized an amazing dinner party, with each course held in a different location. We each lived in different parts of town so we travelled all night. Entrees at one place, main course at another and dessert at a completely different location. This can even be done with your favourite restaurants.

A romantic scavenger hunt is definitely thinking outside the ‘dinner and a movie’ box. Not only will this guarantee lots of fun and laughs, but it will also give you some serious bonding time with your sweetie. A few of my married friends tried it for a year and have now made it a tradition.

For those who can afford the luxury of spending lots of money, a special trip is also a nice surprise. Ideally, we all dream of going to Fiji or Bora Bora, but a simple getaway at a ski resort or a day at the spa can make Valentine’s Day memorable. A couples retreat can help you re-discover your partner and strengthen your relationship. Last year, my best friend re-enacted her first date with her boyfriend. She described it as the most hilarious date she’s ever had.

For those who are single, don’t be afraid to spoil yourself. Valentine’s Day is about showering the one you love with affection. In this case, it’s you.

How do you plan to woo your other half this year?

  1. The reality for most is that Valentine’s Day means a lot of desperate men scrambling for some last minute gift to bribe their “loved one.”
