Community Moderation Reminder
Time flies when you’re having fun with Yahoo! Answers! It’s already been a year and a half since we launched Community Moderation, a system where everyday trusted users work together to report and remove any content that violates our Community Guidelines or Terms of Service. Here’s a refresher if you’d like to be part of this effective system.
How does Community Moderation work?
Before: Any user could report abusive content on Answers. A Yahoo! employee then reviewed the report and decided whether to keep or to delete the content. This system is still in place.
Now: Thanks to Community Moderation, our efforts to control abusive content on Answers have greatly increased. Once a report is submitted to Yahoo!, Community Moderation measures the reputation of both the reporter and the person being reported. The system then determines whether it can remove the reported item directly from the site based on community input or whether further review is needed.
How does the reputation system work?
You should be very familiar with our Community Guidelines in order to become one of our trusted Answers users. When you feel you have a good idea about what’s acceptable on Answers as you begin to report content, you will build a good reputation and gain influence. The more accurate your reporting, the better your reputation will become.
However, if you abuse Community Moderation, your reputation will suffer. With a low reputation, your power to report and remove potential abuse will be reduced, which could result in a suspension.
The community is very important to the Answers team; without it, the site is nothing, so we have set up protective mechanisms to filter out the specific targeting of one user by another. Similarly, the system promotes accurate reporters, giving them more influence.
How does the appeal system work?
Although very effective, Community Moderation is not perfect. Incorrect reports occasionally happen and some users will find their content erroneously deleted. If your question or answer is reported, we’ll send you an e-mail stating that it has been removed. If you feel the system was mistaken, the first thing you should do is read the Community Guidelines to double-check. If you still think there’s been a mistake, click on the “Appeal” link in the e-mail to submit an appeal. This will be reviewed by a Yahoo! employee. If we agree, your question or answer will reappear on Answers, and whomever reported you will have less influence when they report abuse in the future.
We highly encourage you to appeal if you’ve read the Community Guidelines and are sure your content has been removed in error. If your appeal is successful, not only will your content be reinstated but your reputation will be boosted and those who reported you will lose reputation. Of course, we advise you not to appeal just for the sake of appealing, either. If your content truly deserved to be deleted, it is very unlikely we will put it back on the site just because you’ve appealed.
How do you report spam content?
Easy! When you report abuse, simply indicate it is spam. The Community Moderation system is fast and will help you improve your reputation if you report correctly, so reporting spam using the “Report abuse” button is beneficial for everyone.
So, there’s an update about how Community Moderation works — we hope you found it helpful! However, if you still have questions, please leave us a comment and we’ll be happy to assist!

Some feed-back as to the results of my reporting infractions would be helpful. I have reported abuse but do not know the results. If there was feed-back then users would understand better what is and is not reportable. This would probably reduce the number of erroneous reports.
I am disappointed my considerate answer to the question was deleted 2 days ago. I really gave a thoughtful answer that was civil, helpful and community oriented. Both question and my answer are missing.
What happened to it? I just would like to know.
I am also disappointed with the way this system works. A month ago, I reported an abusive question (the original question was fine, but the asker’s “edit” which was a response to my answer was not) however, what happened was my very thoroughly researched answer (which was apparently not what the asker wanted to hear) was deleted.
When I appealed I was told only that my answer violated community guidelines, but gave absolutely no specifics. I had kept a copy of my answer and had several different, unrelated to me people read it along with a copy of the community guidelines and none of them could see how or where it violated the guidelines.
My request for clarification was met with resounding silence. Hence my extreme disappointment with the system.
I had a Level 6 account up until 3 days ago. I and a lot of others have been the repeated targets of report monkeys. I want to make it very clear that I have always be mindful of the terms on Y!A. Most of the VNs I received for petty. All my answers have always been clear, researched and never insulting. I haven’t decided whether or not to appeal. It seems that Y!A staff do not take the time to read the reports that come in. It seems easier just to delete someone. I don’t suppose you will bother responding to this. I have had a good reputation on R & S and have been the victim of a lot of haters and others who get away scott-free. What do you think of that? What happens should someone wish to pursue your terms with legal action on their own? I will be waiting for a response. And if you care to look over my last account that you deleted so easily – you might find out that I NEVER did anything wrong.
Your turn Yahoo Answers. Should you reply back it would be nice to hear from an actual person and not some impersonal form letter.
Thank you for your time.
I think you are experiencing staff shortages and this web site is due to close soon.
What I hear from almost everyone on Yahoo is that the system doesnt work. People have questions and answers removed for no valid reason. Its dont because one person using multiple profiles reports them. Yahoo doesnt give a reason and as far as I can see doesnt even read the appeal or the question when appealed. I have appeals denied and then sent it on to Answers Escelation and had the question reinstated which PROVES the appeal process is just a technical sop for members here and has no real function, other than to make members feel they do have an avenue of appeal.
Don’t report questions (edits) or answers which are based on your own answers. Give it a thumbs down and wait until others have done the same. Then report it and let the thumbs make your case for you. If nobody else gives it a thumbs down, you’re probably just hurting your own reputation be reporting it.
Note to the “Yahoo Answers Team” Can I report you for bad grammar?
Example: If we agree….. whomever reported you …….” Grammar tip: “who becomes whom when it’s preceded by “to” (to whom) – otherwise use “who”.
I was apparently reported for my reply to a question that was completely and without a doubt asked only to elict way out responsees. What I said was the spelling of a sound…not a curse word or even a dirty type of word. Apparently the question was never checked! The questionaire constantly postes questions about “should I eat my fish? I fell into the tank and can’t swim?” get the drift? I was tired of such post and made a remake that means…Give it up! I would like to know if the questions are ever check for content? This poster has numerous ones in Fish. The response was the spelling of a, peraps, rude noise, but it was not a curse word.
