Fly me to the moon

He did it! Cirque Du Soleil tycoon Guy Laliberte became the first clown in space. The cost? Training for months and a cool 35 million dollars reportedly. Not much for the former street performer who founded the world’s biggest circus and went on to become a billionaire.

Now that the Canadian entrepreneur roared into space today aboard a Soyuz capsule, I wonder who’s next? Will Bill Gates soon claim that honor? Former NASA employee Dennis Tito was the first space tourist in 2001, followed by South African entrepreneur Mark Shuttleworth in 2002. American entrepreneur and scientist Gregory Olsen reached for the stars in 2005, and Iranian-American businesswoman Anousheh Ansari followed in 2006. American video game developer Richard Garriott blasted off for the ISS in 2008.

It now seems that sandy beaches and all-suite rooms along with artificial islands in Dubai are  not good enough anymore. Despite the spectacular view, what makes space travel so appealing? Playground for the rich or not, it’s understandable that once your wealth has allowed you to visit every continent, the stars might look very attractive.

What’s your take on space tourism?

  1. I think it’s ridiculous and a big waste of money. They could just give the money up to charity. Laliberte wanted to raise awareness on the water supply on Earth but he could ahve just given the money. Had we established hotels all over the galaxy, I’d say go for it. To me, it’s stupid.

  4. This is good to see, a few months training and 30x million, a bit pricey, though sooner or later, with some marketing, a “Made in China” tag will be on your own craft, at half price, and we can all race Alice* to the Moon, you just have to make them smaller, like a star-fighter with a port-o-potty, and we’re good to go, for a day tripper, Gps and guide rope included,

    :) Have a nice trip
