A Feast of Thanks

thanksgivingjpg

Thanksgiving is around the corner and before you roll up those sleeves to stuff that delicious turkey, ask yourself why we are celebrating this tradition before our neighbors in the South. We have heard all the stories about American Thanksgiving – the original pilgrims celebrated the autumn harvest and settling  in the New world with a feast of thanks – but little is promoted in the media about Canadian Thanksgiving.
We celebrate Thanksgiving on the second Monday in October to give thanks for a successful harvest. Since Canada is further north, the harvest season falls earlier here compared to the United States.

Thanksgiving is traced back to English explorer,Martin Frobisher, who tried to find a northern passage to the Orient. When his quest turned out to be unsuccessful, he established a settlement in Northern America. In the year 1578, he held a formal ceremony, in what is now called Newfoundland, to give thanks for surviving the long journey. This is considered the first Canadian Thanksgiving. Other settlers arrived and continued these ceremonies.

French explorer Samuel de Champlain, also held huge feasts of thanks with other French settlers in Canada. They even formed ‘The Order of Good Cheer’ and shared their food with their Indian neighbors.

Do you have a Thanksgiving tradition?

  5. Usually, my family gets together at mom’s place because she likes to cook for all of us. This year is a bit different because of strife with my brother’s family, I am making a Thanksgiving chicken for my husband and best friend, and everyone else is doing their own thing too.

  6. The Turkey is roasting in the oven as we speak, I do a yam dish, mixed fresh vegetable, tons of potatoes, to be smothered in my to die for gravy, I ad onions, celery NEWFOUNDLAND SAVOURY no other will do
turkey gizzards, now that will be some gravy.
I woke up around 3 am, and baked a pumpkin cheese cake, which will be served with whipped cream.
It is the day we make up for all those dinner invites we have had over the year, and share this meal with our friends, off course there will be plenty of wine.
Have a great Thanksgiving, in spite of circumstance we have a lot to be grateful for!

  7. We had our Thanksgiving Dinner this afternoon, Turkey with Pear-Pecan Stuffing, Scalloped Potatoes, Italian Green Beans, Cranberry-Pear-Maple Compote all served with a Reisling wine. After dinner we had Tiramisu with Coffee. We are thankful to be living in a country where we have more than enough of everything – health, homes, occupations, friends, freedom and access to technology. We can practice our faith unhindered and move about this great land of ours freely.

  12. As i operate a marina, this is one of my busiest weekends. Taking customers requests and info, hauling boats out of the lake, supervising an overworked staff, trying to get paid before people disappear for the winter.
On Monday, I was in the office by 4 am, worked until 9pm, went home, kissed my wife and kids, drank 3 beers, stuffed some cold turkey in my yap, and fell asleep on the couch. My thanksgiving was today, rolled into work about 1030 am, took my entire staff out to lunch at a nice restaurant, handed out some well deserved bonuses, and was home by 3 pm. Don’t get me wrong, I am thankful to be so busy in these lean times, but I sure am glad most of the craziness is over until spring. Happy thanksgiving, all!
