What is it about Edward Cullen?
It’s that time of the year ladies. The new installment of the Twilight Franchise is right around the corner. The vampire fad is peaking yet again and many questions are being raised about whether or not this iddyllic love story is creating the unattainable expectations for young girls Edward Cullen – the vampire who sweeps Bella off her feet . Can you imagine a young Twilighter in her first romantic relationship? Does Edward Cullen give women in general an unrealistic expectation from men?
It’s hard for regular guys to rise to the bar he’s set, especially when women are idealizing Edward to the point where real men can’t compete anymore. Some would say vampires appeal to us because they can literally love you forever if they choose too. The term eternity takes a whole new meaning. In Edward Cullen’s case, centuries of practice to master the art of seduction could be the reason why so many girls are in complete awe over him. No matter it is, it is certainly intriguing.
Have you been bitten by the vampire bug? What do you think of the fascination with vampires?

I have loved vampires long before Twilight, think that has to do with the fact that quite a few people in my family have what we call ‘Vampire’s Disease’ though.
I don’t think its going to really make it harder because of Twilight for regular guys. You might have more of the better guys ending up with the girls because of it.
You know the ones who will go to the movies with their friends, girls, even though it thought to be a chick flix. The ones that aren’t going to judge as easily towards us girls. We don’t go for the guy who looks like Edward, although some might. But a lot will go for the guy who acts like him. He may question us reading a book over and over like Bella read Wuthering Heights, but he will accept it and not make fun of it. He will join us on the couch and watch Romeo and Juliet, even though he dislikes the characters. Those kind of things. He does it because he loves her not cause he has too.
Before Twilight even came out these were the kind of guys I dated. Only my second boyfriend could be compared in looks to Edward, but the one I married only has the good heart. He’s not hansome in others eyes, I remember my mum being told by a coworker of mine that I could do better while I was dating him. But I didn’t agree and still won’t cause I see the other side to him. The one who spoils me with love and time.
i’m so excited for new moon to come out i’m going to see it saturday
I have definatly been in love with vampires before twilight in truth twilight is wayy over rated i still read the books and found them to be very interesting and somewhat addicting but what books arent but now with the movies out and now the show vampire diaries (which i liked the books better than twilight) is only on the air because of twilight and it pisses me off due to the fact they want it so much like twilight that they cut out characters and changed characters
but yes curently i am like frekin out with vampires i just love the fact you can be beautiful forever live forever which would be cool to see all the trends that come and go just the sucking human blood that may be a problem lol
haha. i always have loved vampires. but now that twilight and new moon came out. im MORE! into vampires.
like when i was little i use to beg my mom to be a vampire for haloloween. and id watch buffy the vampire slayer ALL the time and all those lil cartoon vampire shows and stuff.(like that one with the like black girl who would turn into a vampire everynight)
but ever since twilight came out. EVERYONE likes vampires. and no offence to anyone. its starting to get old.
but i still love them.
I know I too liked vampires long before this. I became interested when I was about 10. To be honest I thought Twilight was just huge hype until 2 weeks ago when I saw the movie for the first time. Really the character Edward, unrealistic? yes and no to be honest. It depends on the girl. If this shows her how a girl should be looked at as an amazing creature who should be treated as such, well then that’s an excellent message. However Edwards life (or lack of) seems to revolve around Bella, which isn’t good. Do girls take too much crap from boys these days? TOTALLY, but then there are girls who are guilty of being control freak gf’s and that’s ridiculous
yo was up the sky ha ha lol
I’ve been bitten by the Love Bug.
twilight rules!!!!!!!!!!!! i love it. I read it in 3 days
I have been bitten the vampire bug! But it happened a long time ago, not just because of Twilight. LOL While I found that S. Meyer has a lovely personal style of writing that draws you in, the storyline is actually not that spectacular for the genre.
And I DON’T think girls will expect Edward Cullen in everyday guys. No more than guys expect a playboy bunny after watching ”Girls next door”. It’s just fantasy to indulge in. And need I mention how HAWT the actors in the movie are ???
*drooling*
Personally, Twilight ruined vampires for me. I know it got lots of people interested in them, and that’s great, but now vampires are just sexy beings that would rather have sex with you than suck your blood. And yes, I did read Twilight and New Moon and tried to drag myself through the third one (whatever it’s called) before I inexplicably lost the will to live…
But yes, Twilight is totally creating unrealistic expectations for young girls, I had my friend turn away one of the sweetest, most good looking guys in our school because he ‘wasn’t enough like Edward’ (her actual words) But I kinda think Edward’s creepy… He comes into her room and watches her sleep at night, which is TOTALLY not normal yet is apparently endearing, he’s fricken cold and hard as rock and who really wants to make out with a slab of marble? And apparently he HAS NO FLAWS? At least none that don’t add to his appeal.
Oh and don’t get me started on that fricken baby. VAMPIRES CAN NOT PRODUCE SPERM. The human body stops producing it when you’re dead. Which Edward is.
TWILIGHT ENDORSES NECROPHILIA.
Plus this is sort of unrelated but have you noticed that people bash Harry Potter saying that it’s the devil book because of magic, but vampires are actually demons inhabiting a humans body after their soul was sucked out. And apparently that’s fine.
Bella has sex with demons. DEAD demons. Dead SLABS OF ROCK demons.
-end rant-
lol I agree with Emily
Took the words right out of my mouth
I read the twilight series like 4 months before the movie came out I was the reason all my friends knew about it. I was at the Twlight movie first day it came out and i was at New Moon yesterday (the first day it came out) and I have no clue why I love edward but mostly becuase in reality guys arnt ever that nice. And im team Edward for sure because he was just trying to save her but it kinda didnt work and Jacob think he owns her afetr he leaves then comes back
But thats my comment
byee byee <3
i practically never even heard of twilight before the movie came out and when i saw the movie it was like i dont know what but i was obsessed! i read the books a billion times each (all in less than a week) and i wrote a letter to robert pattinson and everyone is gettig annoyed about how obsessed i am. i think that no guy could realy be edward, i mean it was acting right? not a real person anyway rpattz in real life is very different from edward cullen. for me its the combo of dangerous and beautiful that really caught me.
well, i know for sure that i have been bitten by one wolf!
i <3 twilight saga.
i believe in it….
well, i know for sure that i have been bitten by one wolf!
i <3 twilight saga.
i believe in it…. seriously, i do.
team taylor/jacob!
Doesn’t the “undead” part scare you? When you start to get old and ugly and can’t see anything worth living for, you still don’t die? is that how it goes?
now dislike it becoz all i hear is “oh i love new moon because…”
Anybody been to FML (fmylife.com)? If I had to list the number of “I’ve been dumped by my gf because I’m “not Edward enough”" posts, I’d be needing a few extra hands and maybe a foot or two.
Girls these days (after ingesting a few books about unrealistically perfect guys) have incredibly high “standards” (standards as in an insatiable desire for an exact likeness) in boyfriends. This “vampire fever” is not exactly hyping everyone up. For some, this come as an opportunity to play a few (amusing) pranks on the (creepily obsessed) Twilight fans.
On MLIA (mylifeisaverage.com), there is a mass Harry Potter fan population. And while the internet has been divided into two warring factions (HP and Twilight), MLIAers happily diss “Twifail” en suite.
One last thing. The “demonic” Harry Potter series (which is continuously flamed (to almost no effect) by thy church loving devotees) that rocked the world of literature, is not really “bad” or “a work of the Devil”. It is simply a story, in which Dumbledore mentions love quite a few times (whereas Twilight skips to the creepy stalking, vampire sex, ect ect ect, wierd baseball scene ect ect…) and (HP) explains the inner workings of human emotions (blah snogging *coughGinnycough* blah).
Not that this is flaming (or otherwise degrading) Twilight as all whatsoever. No. Definitely not. This is just the (better) HP view.
Btw, for more HP hilarities, go to mugglenet.com ’s “wall of shame”.
there is the vimpire bat but not vampire bug. How can anybody loves vimpires, disgusting and scary.
I finished the the saga long before the movies came out, and found the first three somewhat decent and a little too simple. Really, anyone could have written it.
I completely agree with Markus when I say that.
I was completely distraught at the last book as although the saga could have been better, it eliminated all hope for humanity for me. It’s just…. terrible.
As for the movie, I wasn’t a huge fan, I guess part of that could have been a theater full of fellow teenage girls screaming every time Edward uttered a word.
And I hate that no one has read the book, they’re too obsessed with Rob Pattison to know that he should NOT BE EDWARD.
But if I had to pick the single worst thing about the whole she-bang, it would most definitely be the vast majority of the fans.
I don’t think that girls really want someone who’s exactly like Edward. Okay, maybe the crazed fan girls do, but you know, the ones who are NORMAL and still like to read the book.
Personally, all I really want in a guy is someone who loves me for who I am, and that’s who Edward is – to the extreme. Of course, no guy out there is perfect enough to accept someone completely like Edward has. It’s only natural that couples will disagree and argue. I think the real unrealistic expectation is that you will one day develop a relationship and not have to invest anything into it – after all, what does Bella ever do for Edward in the book or movies? What does Bella truly sacrifice in order to help Edward? Sure, she’s WILLING to do it, but she never actually DOES IT in the books or movies.
So, I guess what I’m saying is, don’t rely on books or movies or the internet to show you what love really is like.
Experience it for yourself.
I think the reason women especially like vampires so much is because of their main target; the neck. There is something sensual about someone’s mouth on your neck. Its a sensitive spot for women..and men? I dont ask men about their necks, so…
Thats my opinion though. Women like having their necks explored.
i LOVE twilight!!!<3
but, TEAM JACOB!!!
you have to explain your point in full
personely i think that girls loved seriues relation ship.
hahah i was just thinking about this. i’m obsessed with vampires. tehe! Go team Edward!!!
It’s mating season!
Frankly, myyahoo, I could not give a plug nickel about Twilight and the vampire craze. Big whoopty doo.
Let me put it to you this way. I was bitten by the vampire bug when I was about 7. I used to read every book on vampires I could get my hands on, I studied them throughout history. I actually hate the modern day view of vampires. Sure, Dracula was pretty cool, but the original sociopathic vampires, the REAL creatures of the night, who went out at night not because the sun hurt them but because they were dark, bloated, re-animated corpses that could blend in with the night and stuck out like a sore thumb in the day. These new, gaunt, sexy vampires with “feelings” you keep reading about disgust me. And, to be quite honest, Twilight made me die a little inside. “vegetarian vampires that sparkle in teh sunlight”. Seriously? It’s terrible! It’s not literature, it’s not a good story, Edward Cullen is an abusive controlling jackass of a boyfriend… Get your heads out of your arses, ladies! If any of your friends had a boyfriend like that you’d have been telling them to dump his ass for quite awhile.
twilight sucks ass and just ruined my life
save a regular human being kill a twilight actor
Twilight sucks. I’ll stick with Selene’s Underworld.
I have always loved vampires, but when Twilight came out my love grew more into an obsession. I have always loved any books that deal with fantasy. I do think that somewhere out there a girl may be able to find an Edward Cullen, how ever I more beleive that everyone has their own “Edward” waiting to find his “Bella”
I think the problem is that girls do expect more from us guys..they want us to climb trees like a monkey or bite them..in reality..theres none of that. Twiligth has become an abomination to everyone who actually likes vampires..REAL lore vampires not sparkling lovey dovey ones.
No one cared about vampires or read much about them, especially little teenage girls..but add a “hot” teenage guy in it and they are all over it!. No one knew or understood about vamps, aside from the stake in the heart, the garlic the sunlight and all that..now, they think most vampires should be like Mr.Edward Cullen…
Its gargabe..
I love how ridiculous people are getting over these movies. Edward is basically an alcoholic abusive husband, but no one sees it because they hide it under a mask of vanity and poorly written dialogue. He is beyond manipulative in the way that he uses Bella consistently for his own gain, with absolutely no regard to her safety or well being. These books and movies just reinforce the fact that women chase after abusive men who don’t see their full worth.
After seeing the first movie, I can’t bring myself to even attempt to watch the second one. And calling vampirism a fad is a little ridiculous. Its as much a fad as witches and witchcraft were after harry potter came out. Bram Stoker is rolling in his grave because of what Twilight has done to the mythos that he created.
I think the twilight series was amazing I read all th ebooks in 5 days. But I dont understand why. When you really look at the style of writting in the books I could have wrote it myself. The writting is nothing special but there’s SOME sort of subliminal messages in these books which may explain why I couldnt keep my eyes from reading and shut everybody out of my life for those 5 days.
It pisses me off that most people haven’t read the books but they love the movie? are you freaking nuts? I dont understand how anybody could not read the book and understand the movie. I had to explain everything to my boyfriend when we were watching it. They portrayed Edward as some creepy stalker and his and Bella’s relationship was just so awkward and not cute in Twilight.
Although I must admit New Moon was 10 times better than twilight given a different director. The first movie completely disappointed me given its lw budget look and failure to really get in depth to bella and edwards relatioship. EDWARD DOESNT EVEN SMILE ever in that movie! he just seems so creepy.
I was soooo disappointed I wanted to walk out of the theatre crying because I could not believe what a mess they made of such a good story.
Twilight isn’t that good. It’s something that anybody could write, if they had enough spare time. The characters are shallow and cliched, and the story lacks any depth or immersion. Oh, and vampires aren’t flaming homosexuals like Edward Cullen, They’re bloodthirsty beasts that will disembowel you and tear your limbs off.
H, i’m 33 and i’ve always had a thing for vampires. When i was in highschool and college (we’re going back about 16 years here!) my friends and i used to bite each others necks. But it wasn’t Edward…he was just a sparkle in Stephenie Meyer’s eye…it was Lestat de Lioncourt and Louis de Pointe du Lac (my favourite!). Anne Rice’s vampires will always hold a special place in my heart, but i do love Edward and the Cullens as well. I’ve been watching The Vampire Diaries but i am still trying to warm up to it. I think i will read the books, they have to be better!
Oh i am also a big fan of Buffy the Vampire Slayer.
I just love vampires in general!
I have no problem with certain types of vampires – I like vampires that are evil, scary, and ugly at least some of the time. To me, the Twilight vampires are so sissy and boring, the same goes for Anne Rice’s stuff. Give me good ‘ol Dracula, please
I was definitely in to vamps before **DIEHARD Buffy fan here** but a friend of mine got me in to the books and now I’m hooked.. It has nothing to do with Edward, it’s all about the books.
What I don’t get is stupid people who think they are “Real” Vampires. Helloooo to all the idiots out there if you have fake fangs then how can you be a “Real” vampire? Then there are those who “feed off of energy” WHAT??? Vampires feed off of human blood and lots of it not like these freaks who get a friend to cut themselves and give them a couple of drops of blood once a week. Give me a break there is NO REAL VAMPIRES.
I personally think this series is stupid, the author is also kind of a drama queen (not releasing the fifth book because it got leaked, which she probably did for publicity). and to the last post, lol believe what you will.
Hello
my comment on all this, I have had an interest in vampires ever since Buffy The Vampire Slayer, watched the whole 7 seasons of it. I also loved Anne Rice’s take.
The problem I have with Twilight, is what has been mentioned. I saw the first movie, read the second book(which took me months to finish because it was so boring) I even bought the third book but I could not endure the crap any longer. Bella is just a character I do not enjoy reading, how much she complains and whines about her life is just sickening. Also I don’t like how the author protrays women to basically be a doormat, edward leaves…comes back and shes all happy again, showing that having a man in your life is that only way she could be happy. And having them sparkle? that is…so stupid, vampires are supposed to be mean and evil.
I really like the Vampire Diaries, the character of Damon is just soo good , he’s sarcastic and most of all..he’s evil! he wants to drink blood. Vampires are seen as sexy to women because they are tormented and bad boys…so they have that appeal. (twilight vamps don’t have that appeal because they haven’t hit puberty yet it seems LOL)
anyways, thats my two sense…but yes always been a vampire fan but not a fan of twilight.
Hey, jessie. There’s no real proof that vampires don’t exist! …So people are free to believe that they’re real or not.
I’m a fan of vampires, but I’m not a fan of the Twilight series. Though, I have to admit, Jacob’s hot!
The Twilight saga seems to be similar to Vampire Knight. Vampire Knight is a manga and anime (I like reading the manga), and it’s way more cooler!!! (Though it might be because I’m an anime and manga fan! XD) Twilight fans should check out Vampire Knight! (Manga/graphic novels seem more enjoyable – to me that is! ^^)
Also, Edward is not a great guy. “No you can’t go hang with your best friend because I don’t like him.”
“No you can’t keep things from me”
“no you can’t go out with your friends without me following”
I dated a guy like that. It was awful.
hahaha pickles
Rather than society focusing on “vampire bugs” we should really focus on what is going on in this world and what we are going to do with it and what direction we are thinking of going whether good or bad. Talking about Twittlesticks and Twilicks won’t push us in a very valuable direction. Think; look how much news time is wasted when a person is talking about Twilight and how, “Miley Cyrus isn’t interested in Twilight”. Good for her, maybe she knows what I am trying to explain and has seen the craze and idolism of this series. Sure I might watch it in the future, but right now I got to focus on school and not on silly vampires.
The media is vampire crazy not the people. It seems that I have time to write this comment right now, but only in hopes that people will realize that you don’t have to go to EVERY movie that comes out in the theatre. Imagine the time wasted by viewing all those movies. 10 000 hours of non educational movies is equal to 10 000 of video games. 10 000 hours of work filled with dignity and love is 10 000 hours used to help yourself grow and gain character. I’m not saying this to get you to stop watching movies, I’m saying this to let you see that we need to focus on our own character and self-disipline skills before we watch movies, movies, and more movies.
All in all, life is not movies, life is more than movies. It’s outside your house. It’s living out in the forest. It’s living out of the city. And you can spend all day in it. And when you are in it you don’t want to leave and turn on a video and escape from it. This life is all I need and I really don’t need this video that is going to be around $25.00 CND. That’s my point and it is what I believe.
yes, i have indeed been bitten.
i love Twilight much i do want to be a vampire. gosh if only i were bella…..
I LOVE TWILIGHT !!!!!! AND ALL THE CAST!!!!!
I AM THE #1 TWI-HARD!!!!
New Moon was good saw it for my 2nd time in less then 7 days after i saw it for my first time..
I started reading the twilight series before it was ever super popular (about 3-4 years ago) and i really loved it back then. Now that its extremely popular and it seems like EVERYONE knows about it or have read it. To me it feels like its lost its appeal since its not just something i like to read, its something 85% of the girls i know and even lots of guys are obsessed with. It not longer feels special, which is to bad.
I think that the book is not only just overrated, but even a bad influence on younger women. In the 2nd book New Moon, ***SPOILER ALERT*** Edward leaves Bella, and she takes it so horribly! It talks about how she was basically a zombie for about 4 months after Edward left her. As if girls don’t have enough self esteem issues, now S. Meyer is telling them that if the person they loves leaves, they wont be able to live without them! thats a horrible message that young women will take out of that book. Bella always talks about how she couldn’t live without him and how if he were to die, she would have to as well. Yeah, real romantic, but now we have 12 year old girls getting depressed if they don’t have a boyfriend or the get dumped because if they want to be like Bella (and they want to be like her since they think that her personality will attract “other Edwards”) they have to surround their whole life around that one guy. Bella stopped hanging out with her friends after he left and for that reason she didn’t have any to go to when she needed it.
But i do think that it gives young women unrealistic expectations in men too. especially the young readers still in their pre teen years. In the book, you read Bellas side of the story, so its like you get to experience every perfect thing that Edward does and it feels like its happening to you personally. You then put down the book and remember that Bella gets Edward and you never will, so you should go out to find your own Edward who’s just as perfect as the one in the book.
After i had read most of the series, i started to notice that Edward wasn’t even a great guy. Actually, he’s down right annoying! Yeah maybe he’s sweet, understanding, caring and drop dead gorgeous, but he’s just so controlling over Bella it drove me insane! Its as if she was his own property. He wouldn’t let her hang out with her best friend and pretty much babysat her secretly when they weren’t together. I read all the books twice, and during the second time, Edward seemed more like an annoying over protective brother then a boyfriend…
If these little girls are going to let themselves get influenced by a fictional guy in this series, let it be Jacob. He is described as the sun in the books, and i really do like his character. He’s cute, funny, honest, loving, sarcastic, careless and has a bit of a temper. There are most definitely real guys out there who fit this description. Some great qualities but also some flaws of course, like any person on this planet. I’d be very happy if i ended up with someone like Jacob, and i can say this because i know that it is possible, unlike Edward…did i mention Taylor Lautner is sooo hot??
TEAM JACOB!!!
haha if i was still a bit twilight fan, i’d definitely be a crazy team jacob fan.
I think that Edward Cullen is not really as hot as he was when twilight came out, but i think that the reason people are so attrracted to him (like me for example) is his attitude. He is the most careing guy anyone could ever possibly know (even though hes fictional). He would kill himself if bella died and that fact, the fact that they cant be without each outher is breath-taking. That is what every girl wants and that is why they love him so much. Girls want a guy who would never leave, who will be her best friend and her boy friend, a boy who you can always love and who can always love you back.
Thats my answer
I read twilight and I don’t know, i didn’t like it very much. I thought the story was quite poor and rather boring. And then all this movie craziness… It will go away after a while, because when you see Twilight for what it really is, you’ll kinda go, “What the heck was I thinking?”
Mmm… am I allowed to say that I think Harry Potter is better?
Personally, I think that if girls want their guys to be more like Edward, they should really have a lesson on “How to get a life!”
I Love David Tennant, and Yes I shall admit I am OBBESSED, and I do roleplaying ( for some who doesnt know what ropleplaying is, look it up.) So yes I can see some points in why girls might be competely obessed with Edward, but he just a character, nothing more. Going back onto my roleplaying, I act like i am the tenth Doctor, but I dont expect my Bf to be the David Tennant look alike.
Because One i dont see why you should date someone just because they acted like David tennant or look like him. After all it is all about the heart and the personalitlies of the guy you love.
I never saw twlight number One. But saw new moon, yes the Movie was Great, But Im still not a fan.
I always loved vampires, way before twlight, but Im not obbessed about Vampire either. weather Im just crazy, but Sometimes I think they are cool…Even My friends cast me a vampire since when I bleed Im licking my own blood, or licking someone elses for a dare, or play bitting. But I just dont see how someone can be obessed with someone like Edward who barely smiles..what kinda person is he for running away and then coming back?? seriously??
vampires don’t sparkle. this series is just a kiddy version of vampires. vampires are suposed to be blood thirsty and scary. pfft. this is a disgrace to the vampire name!
Sigh. The world (comprised of 80% teenage females, and a surprisingly large fraction of males) has literally gone insane… does no one find vampires scary anymore? Frankly I find the idea of some strange man (or woman) biting into my neck and extracting (no, SUCKING–as in CONSUMING) my blood rather disgusting (and not to mention vomit-inducing)… but alas, I suppose this means little girls won’t be scared of them hiding in their closets anymore… now it’ll just be psychotic killers who appear perfectly human…those are the creepies of today? Yup…Vampires aren’t monsters anymore, they’re gorgeous heroes! … Pft.
i love edward for that reason. its fantasy and thats where it stays. its a work of fiction meant to take you away to another world and thats where i go to meet edward cullen. unfortunately my edward cullen looks like robert pattinson cause i never heard of twilight before or of him.
as for the tweens, they’ll get over it. and move onto someone else soon enough. it happens over and over and over again. in my day it was NKOTB.
I have read all 4 of the twilight books, plus the Midnight Sun that Stephanie Meyer wrote half of and didn’t release, until it leaked. I really liked the books, and I definately think that the books are much better then the movies. I know, that for the sake of the length of each movie, they have to leave some stuff out, but they shouldn’t be changing things either… She wrote the book her way for a reason.. not the way that movie producers want it. Anyways, I own Twilight, and I have seen New Moon, and I intend to own it when it comes out on DVD, as do I intend to see and own Eclipse and Breaking Dawn when they both come out. I support the Twilight Saga, but I am not a Twihard.. I know when to draw the line.
Its a book/movie. It is purely fictional! Get over it. Its not real.. And as for the proof of whether vampires do or do not exist.. there is no proof either way. So with that being said, I choose to believe that they are fictional.
But this is just my opinion, and everyone is entitled to their own thoughts.
I think the writer of the blog is right , having girls fantasize about vampires , is making it harder for real men to appeal to women. I have never fantasized about loving a werewolf or vampire , yuck!!! I think that people are taking to way ugly extreme level of fanmania. I read the twilight series about two times. I know there is better literature out there for junior high and high school students. If you want to expierence romance and action , here is a very simple solution ; get a real relationship of your own with a (cue:drumroll sound effect) human being. The best way to experience any emotion is be in the moment. You see though completely repulsive couples that scream and agrue but in a cutely persasive way, one you well be like that and you won’t even recognize yourself. Good bye sanity , hello passion:)
