Are you beautiful?
It was recently reported that BeautifulPeople.com – the website behind the latest headline-grabbing stunt – has expelled more than 5,000 users from its global community. The reason? These members have been found guilty of posting pictures of themselves over the Holidays showing a heavier waist line. As if the whole purpose of the site was not controversial enough – it bans “ugly people” from joining its ranks – the recently excluded “festive fatties” have been encouraged to re-apply once their physical appearance can be deemed attractive again.
Many might cringe or scream foul at the idea of a social networking site that prides itself in promoting ‘gorgeous’ people exclusively, but aren’t we all guilty of it? After all, we all like to see and be around beautiful people. We may advocate inner beauty, but at the end of the day, who doesn’t indulge in fantasies involving Beyonce or Megan Fox? Is there anything wrong with being shallow sometimes?

Well the question is, how do you define outer beauty and is it really a universal standard. What one may consider beauty another may consider ugliness. For example in most of North America it’s fake thats considered beautiful.. fake hair colour, fake breasts, fake tans and lots of makeup paired with clothes that are more than revealing. To people in other countries this may be considered the opposite of beauty. India for example.. their beauties are far more natural, their clothes less revealing, everything much different. The Khoi Khoi which are a people in Africa their women have extra large buttocks and elongated labia, this is considered beautiful by the men and sexual selection has preserved these traits. In the past expanded waistlines in women were considered very beautiful and attractive, you have only to peruse the typical nude portraits of the time to see that the thin women of today would not have been considered “beauties” back then. So from this we learn that the definition of beauty evolves over time and varies geographically.. However if you look at the definition of inner beauty you will find that it has changed very little, and that when all outer beauty is gone or when it’s definition changes what remains inside is just as valuable as ever. Shallowness is fleeting and changeable, as is outer beauty.. but beauty of the soul lasts forever. Peace!
Everyone is beautiful in their own way. there are many types of beautiful: physical, mental, emotional, spiritual…What these websities are doing is absolutely ridiculous! They ignore the most important aspect of a human being: his/her personality! Ok, you expelled a person from the website because he/she is overweight? Did they ever think about how that person might feel afterwards? of course, it’s all about looks for these people. These days, the shallowness of a person can be so cruel, that no wonder a lot of young people are committing suicide! It’s the environment that they live in. There is only one thing to blame for all this, and that thing is the media! they’ve been brainwashing us humans with tons of garbage like hair color, make-up, lipsticks, diets and what not…those things only hide the true self of a human being! You want to see a beautiful person? Go look in the mirror and smile, and the answer is right infront of you! Not everybody may look physically attractive, but at least some of us great human beings! There is an old saying that says “someone who is beautiful from far, is far away from beautiful!” Those are usually the people with big egos and focus only on the material things in life. What about the spirit of a person?…
I think that since people have realized that there perspective of beauty isn’t the same as others; they are either proud or ashamed. I don’t like the way I look, although it has nothing to do with attractiveness. I have some what low self esteem because I have trouble keeping a regular exercise schedule. I eat healthy but my body isn’t healthy because 5 years I ago I was a binge eater. My emotions ruled what I ate and I had no regard for my health. My life was at one of the most stressful points it has ever been. My life has had an ebbing and flowing cycle for stress since then. So I still struggle with eating right, once I find that balance I can follow a regular exercise schedule and find myself “beautiful.”
I think the people that were banned from the gorgeous website were not only banned because they weren’t “ideal beauties” but also because they were trying to promote the fact that they weren’t perfect yet beautiful.
My idea of beauty is a healthy body that is muscular with some fat deposits, (not just skin and bones, under 112 pounds) yet not necessarily a size 2 for women and fits in your BMI (body mass index.) range I don’t think that it’s a bad thing to want to look “beautiful” but you shouldn’t become obsessed with this perfect body image that you well never get except on a airbrushed magazine.
We are bombarded with images of obese (20% over BMI weight) and underweight (20% below BMI weight) people. What we forget to realize is the unhealthy people have a huge range in-between those numbers. According to my BMI numbers my weight is average for my age, sex, and height but my waist line endangers me to diabetes and strokes. A number can’t tell you who you are, or what to eat, but in some cases in can warn you of health risks.
Wow, this must be a joke.
When the day arrives that an internet site can dictate what beauty is, we should all stand up and say “enough”…beauty, in all its forms – physical, mental, spiritual, etc.
Thank you for the article that opens the dialogue. And to every single person out there who imagines, real or otherwise, that they fall short of beauty, I will just say one thing: You are here, you are real, you are worth it and you are so incrediblly beautiful.
Love and Namaste.
Some of the details for that site, is that the users vote for who is upholding within that dating site, sort of like here in Answers with thumbs and voting, maybe that company or competition could create new services on other guidelines, obviously these ousted folk are not as bad as described, maybe they could create their own new group site, like: Better-people.com, or Besties.com, or Bigger-hearts.com, or Beauty-eh!.com,
Now Yamster, you know where the beauty’s at, chirping your heart out, ’cause you know you’re all that,
Beauty is youth, Beauty is wisdom,
Beauty has spirit, Beauty sublime,
Beauty of trues, Beautiful freedoms,
Beauty is in awe of ones Beauty mind,

- a good example that beauty is not as simple as time on display, curious goes the open eye that can not seek, nor be seen, truce yet to the forte
I am beautiful when I care. Whether it’s about my outer appearance or inner beauty. Looks can change and so can our perception. Growth and openness is beautiful. I grow my knowledge and I’m open to change; whether it is physical change or character change. I’ve never heard or experienced with BeautifulPeople.com, nor do I care to since it does not combine inner beauty with outer beauty.
I see nothing wrong with this. The website is like a club that has rules on who can join. Once you no longer fulfill the requirements, you are out of the club… It seems simple enough to me.
I’m not a member, and I probably couldn’t even be one even if I wanted to (but I never would just because I dislike those two owner guys’ personalities very much), but I really don’t understand why people pout at their website. There is nothing wrong with it as far as I’m concerned.
beauty is in the eye of the beholder. People with beautiful bodies don’t always have beautiful souls. Beauty is only skin deep. How thick is your skin?
Beauty is not what you look like, Beauty is the combination of who you are, what you are, and what do you do with your beauty. Remember beauty is only skin deep, beauty inside is your whole body and mind. If you do the right things and help others than you have an inner beauty that nobody can come close to. Then add that to your outer beauty and it is an unbreakable combination that you can use to help others or you can use it to do harm to others. That is beauty in my opinion.
Think it’s wrong what they are doing, how could they do that to these girl?!
Outrageous!
Why is it that woman HAVE to look beautiful, woman are pressured to look perfect, while men don’t have to barely put any effort at all.
But the woman who just do stick to being all natural they get called down.
Men are the main reason for all this. >:L
Beautifulpeople.com is stupid. It honestly has to be a joke.
…am I the only one who noticed that the author spelled “waist” wrong? You’d think the “yahoo canada answers team” would read over their work.
Personally I think I am beautiful, this is because I made this saying, beauty is true if you believe not if someone says. So if you believe you are beautiful,if someone says you are beautiful and you don’t agree you arent. But thats just me.
I find the idealization of beauty so sad. A web site that expels people who do not match their standards of beauty is out of touch with reality and people who want to be on that web site need to take a course to study the realities of life and things that really do matter. Further, and I’m going out on a limb here, I find it incredibly sad that people post in almost all categories, pictures of themselves and ask if they are pretty or beautiful. When did society become so beauty oriented? The media have always promoted beauty and shown pictures of movie stars. You don’t have to look far to find magazines with feature items describing how some poor actress has violated the beauty requirements currently in force and has the style police running after them. We need to take this down many notches and try to promote being healthy and not worry if someone has a blemish, a crooked smile or eyebrows that are too thick or thin. We need to focus on the inner qualities that make it a pleasure to talk with someone who is able to form coherent sentences that do not reference in any way the requisite beauty standards of today. Let’s try to get people talking about things that really matter such as helping people find jobs, getting health care for everyone regardless of their income and taking back our lives to focus on our families and friends instead of trying to keep up with the expensive standards of columnists who don’t have any sense of reality or what it takes to get by in today’s world. Maybe a little reflection on making all stores, medical buildings, public washrooms, etc. accessible for people in powerchairs, scooters or who use walkers. I feel so sad that we’ve become the society who values beauty to the point of discriminating against those who don’t meet these ever changing standards. When will the rest of us stand up and say “Enough!”? Why don’t we make this decade one to be noted for people realizing what is truly important and recognize those who truly make a difference in areas that really matter? Or, are we too enamoured of the beauty standards to care about what really matters?
I want to learn English and converstion among people …there are many picture in my emile I’M n;t understand>>I want question a bout me or any title (so I feeling interesting)please answer “”"”"”"”"”"due to i want work company.where is teacher ?you have quies experience please write to me soon yours faithfully HANA
I think if people have enough money, they can make themself beatiful. Or atleast on the outside. But naturaly beatiful is something your born with. No money can by that. You can only envy it.
your beautiful… if you want to be.
To the people on the beautiful people site: Just don’t post picyures of you after the holidays, that’s all, problem solved!
To much bad think append in the world we are more selfish them beautiful. Same say I am not bad looking I will feel it when I do samethink to change the world!
i think there is a big deal.. you know people are only beautiful if they have a good personality too. not just the looks or thats how a real people would look at it. There could be a male or female and the could be the most beautiful person in the world but if they were a bitch that would make them ugly correct? most would agree. cause in this world it’s not about what you wear it’s about how you wear it.
Thanx for asking… i hope this helps…
Well, I can see why this topic would receive this many comments because it does make people wonder about what this society is coming to. I’m not surprised by what is being implied in this article because I can already see that this IS a shallow society we live in. We all make excuses for our own irrational beliefs and to be honest, I still have a hard time believing that “Beauty is skin deep.” I personally think that the statement is false but then again, it’s forcing you to think and look at things the other way. I mean how is it skin deep when “Beauty is in the eye of a beholder”?
Well, what does it matter? I think it doesn’t matter what other people think is beautiful because in the end, what matters if what you think of yourself. There are times when I don’t think of myself as beautiful at all because it’s hard for me to get passed certain features about myself that I don’t see is right. Physically and emotionally, I don’t see myself as beautiful. So basically even if someone was to tell me that I am, it would be hard for me to believe it.
I think for society to look at the reality of beauty would be near impossible because it’s constantly being distorted and people are constantly brainwashed of the ‘ideal’ kind.
