pumpkinIt’s that time of the year again. Time to celebrate Halloween. Will our unabated love affair with vampires grow even stronger this year? Retail stores have revealed that the late great Michael Jackson seems to be the most popular costume this year. If you are on a tight budget this year, there are ways to keep the spirit of Halloween 2009 alive and well. In fact, going green this year can actually save you money as well as the environment.

•    Borrow from Mother Nature: A trip to your backyard and the local farmer’s market will provide all you need  for decorations— gourds, pumpkins, leaves and dried flowers.
•   Buy candy in bulk : Its cheap and minimizes packaging waste.
•    Swap: Instead of buying new costumes, do a costume swap with friends and family. You can also try a hand at making your own costume.
•    Walk, don’t drive: It saves you gas and gives the benefits of physical activity.
•    Recycle: Use re-usable bags for trick or treating, after which, recycle your pumpkins and any other organic material by composting it. The compost can be used as fertilizer for your garden.

How will you spend Halloween? What are you favorite costumes?
